Miners are so desperate to get the cards needed to mine Ethereum that they’re leasing Boeing 747s to fly them directly from the manufacturers to their mining facilities reported Quartz. The 747 was used at the height of the Ethereum craze in early June when prices for the currency were up over 3,000% for the year and millions of dollars of the currency were being mined every day. Those wanting to collect as much of that as possible while prices were high were ready to pay top dollar to get AMD’s cards to their mining facilities. Speed is especially critical since cryptocurrencies typically get more difficult to mine over time, reducing the rewards of mining.
This has helped shares of AMD which have risen 11% since earnings were announced on July 25 – and 152% over the year as a whole.
